2023 International Literacy Day was a success for our community – Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies in Cuyahoga County.
Every year on September 8th we recognize and celebrate International Literacy Day (ILD). Since 1967, ILD celebrations have taken place annually worldwide to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society.
This year’s ILD theme was “Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies,” and provided an opportunity to join efforts to accelerate progress towards education and lifelong learning and to reflect on the role of literacy in building more inclusive, peaceful, just, and sustainable societies.
Since 2014, The Literacy Cooperative has led the community’s participation in UNESCO’s annual celebrations as a way of advocating for our community’s commitment to literacy. Using this year’s theme, we invited the community and our partners to promote literacy by posting a quote, saying, or photo of how reading inspires safety and peace on social media using our #BooksBuildPeace and #ILD23 hashtags.
The 2023 campaign was a great success! Across all of The Literacy Cooperative’s social media platforms, we had over 4,200 impressions and boasted more than 120 posts with our community hashtags. Scroll down to see some of the pictures from the day.
We want to express our thanks and appreciation to all partners involved in the 2023 campaign. They include: Ideastream Public Media, Cleveland Reads, Youth Opportunities Unlimited, Cleveland Foundation, Step Forward, Literacy Innovations, LLC, Early Ages Healthy Stages, Seeds of Literacy, Reach Out and Read, Greater Cleveland, Operation Comic Book, The Centers for Families and Children, Ohio Options for Adults at Cuyahoga Community College, Cleveland Metropolitan School District!
The Literacy Cooperative is grateful to our community for sharing our messages about the importance of advancing literacy in our community. Literacy provides the opportunity for equality, inclusion, and advancement for all. ILD is a great platform to bring awareness to this issue. We encourage everyone to continue the work each and every day.
