The Literacy Cooperative
Universal Design for Learning Framework was created to encourage educators to design learning activities to optimize learning for all students. Rather than create lessons and add accommodations for learners with different needs, the Universal Design for Learning encourages beginning lesson design with the goal of reaching all ability levels and learning styles. In this session participants will explore the UDL framework, and gain strategies for making lessons that optimize learning for all students.

Whether you have been teaching English as a Second Language for months or years, you know that the ESL classroom requires preparation, creativity, and flexibility. In this workshop, we discussed the essential elements of lesson design centered around appropriate learning activities for different learning styles. In addition, we also applied these principles to discuss and create a set of effective and engaging sample lessons ready for use in your classroom. This video will provide a very brief overview of what DEI means and where inequities originate so that you will have a common language and understanding of DEI. The majority of the video will focus on 10 practical strategies that programs can implement to infuse DEI through every component of their program. PRESENTER: Carmine Stewart, Ph.D., Aspire Consulting & Educational Services conducts professional development workshops for adult literacy instructors that provide them with strategies and tools useful for improving the instruction of all adult learners. Carmine has designed a certificate program for adult literacy practitioners that she offers in partnership with Cleveland State University and is the President and CEO of Aspire Consulting and Educational Services. Additionally, she is the Vice-President of Programming at Seeds of Literacy and an Adjunct Professor at Cleveland State University where she teaches future educators in the Adult Learning and Development and Curriculum & Foundations departments. Since 2019, The Literacy Cooperative has provided an annual update to the Cuyahoga County Literacy Dashboard. This professional development session focused on strategies that are helpful for all learners but are particularly helpful for learners on the lower end of the proficiency spectrum. We tackled strategies to effectively improve reading skills, student writing, and how to develop “numbers sense” and concept fluency in adult learners.
