In recognition of Read Across America Day, The Literacy Cooperative, and Gold Sponsor PNC Bank, the evening of May 25, 2022, hosted their annual Read Across America Celebration. This event discussed the importance of reading for brain development from Dr. John Hutton and celebrated the inaugural Kurt Karakul Literacy Award winner, Seeds of Literacy.

Keynote speaker, Dr. John Hutton is a pediatrician and clinical research fellow at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He is inspired by his experience as a father of three, fueling deep passion for reading aloud and “analog” childhood — the kind with limited screen time and lots of human engagement and free play.

At the event, $20,000 will be awarded to a non-profit or public service organization in Cuyahoga County that embodies Kurt Karakul’s passion for literacy and his conviction to make a difference in others’ lives. For decades, Kurt Karakul has been a champion for literacy and a hero to thousands who can now read. The Kurt Karakul Literacy Award was established by Third Federal Foundation and The Literacy Cooperative to recognize and support the next generation of “Kurts” in our community.
