ESOL Learn by Teaching – Maximize Student Engagement and Learning
How can we aid learners to move through the stages of learning: from memorizing to internalizing for lasting and transformative learning? In this workshop, we will explore the principles of the framework Learning by Teaching (Lernen durch Lehren) which emphasizes student agency and involvement.
This methodology was originally designed for language learning, and we will focus on its application in the English as a Second Language setting. The principles and activities, however, have been successfully utilized in other academic disciplines.
We will discuss the elements of this approach and analyze and create sample activities for use in our learning settings.
Presenter: Heidi Kempt Chew has been an English as a Second Language (ESL) professional for two decades, teaching academic courses as well as community/refugee classes. In addition, she has been as cross-cultural trainer conducting workshops for the International Student Services at the Case Western Reserve University and training volunteers working with international student groups at Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland State University. Heidi holds Masters Degrees in Theology, Journalism, and in Curriculum and Instruction-ESL. Her Ph.D. is in Secondary Education-ESL and Cross-Cultural Training.
