Get Out the Vote! LLN Event

This virtual gathering of the Literacy Learning Network will be a great opportunity to learn from experts on the importance of voting, how to elevate important issues around voting, and ways to mobilize providers and learners to engage in the process. Speakers: 
 Devontá Dickey serves as the Advocacy and Engagement Coordinator for Cleveland VOTES, a nonpartisan democracy building and mobilization entity that aims to strengthen civic muscle and power to ensure we have a more informed, participatory, and cohesive community. Through his efforts with Cleveland VOTES, Devontá is co-designing Cleveland VOTES’ Equitable Civic Engagement framework aimed to encourage us to reimagine how to we build democratic power in all we do while addressing the structural, systemic, and institutional barriers resulting in apathy to be civically engaged.

 Dr. Mittie Davis Jones serves as Interim Director of The Diversity Institute at Cleveland State University.  Dr. Jones is also Associate Professor Emerita at Cleveland State University having retired after 31 years as a faculty member and administrator. She holds degrees from Wayne State University and Michigan State University. Dr. Jones has been a practitioner, student, and researcher in the field of urban affairs for over 45 years.  She has been a consultant and evaluator for numerous housing, educational, and health programs. Over the years, she has served on boards of several community-based organizations and is currently engaged in efforts to reduce gun violence with Moms Demand Action and to promote political participation with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Alpha Omega Chapter.

Rev. Dr. Susan K. Smith and Rev. Joan Van Becelaere, Nonpartisan Ohio Voter Outreach Committees. The 2020 Nonpartisan Ohio Voter Outreach Committee is led by the Ohio Voter Rights Coalition, a coalition of nonpartisan statewide organizations that advocates for voting rights, ballot access, and general voter empowerment. Participants in the Outreach Committee include faith communities, regional and statewide advocacy groups, the League of Women Voters, Ohio Votes, Unitarian Universalist Justice Ohio/UU The Vote, Columbus Chapter of the Ohio Poor People’s Campaign, All Voting is Local and more. Our goal is to work together to be greater than the sum of our parts and minimize duplicate outreach efforts.
