Being Home by Traci Sorell and Grilled Cheese? Yes, Please! by Tim Kleyn are great books to read to children that focus on themes of home, being together, family, comfort and play.
Along with reading the book with your little one, try out these activities with affordable and accessible materials!

Instructions:
- On a large piece of paper, write HOME, FAMILY, or a name in a bold, hollow capital letters.
- As you write the letters, sound them out. Use the 44 Phoneme video by The Rollins Center for reference.
- Let your child dictate some thoughts about your home. You can write these around the large letters. Some sample prompts for conversation:
- Tell me about our home
- Do you have a favorite room?
- What do you like about home?
- What is in our home?
- How do you feel when at home?
- Look for shapes and try counting things in your home and write or draw them in the letters. You can count:
- Rooms
- Doors
- Windows
- Steps
- Decorate the paper with your child with the other materials you have.
This activity helps children become more familiar with letters and sounds in the alphabet. Prompting your child with questions and conversations and writing them on paper for them to see validates their thoughts and builds connection.
We hope you have fun exploring your home and making meaningful, engaging art!
