Celebrating Independent Bookstore Day with The Checkered Shelf Bookshop

The Literacy Cooperative is proud to partner with The Checkered Shelf Bookshop for Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday, April 25 from 11am – 9pm.

The Checkered Shelf Bookshop is an independent, woman-owned neighborhood bookstore created as a warm and welcoming space for every member of the community. It is a place where readers can discover their next favorite book, connect with fellow book lovers, and inspire the next generation of young readers!

Owner Mary Pat Jolivette opened the shop in January in the former Appletree Books space, with the grand opening of the new space taking place on April 11, 2026.

As part of the April 25 celebration, a portion of all sales for the day will benefit The Literacy Cooperative and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, helping provide free monthly books to local children from birth to age five.

Visitors can also join in the fun by searching for a hidden Golden Ticket somewhere in the shop. The lucky finder will win one year of free audiobooks from Libro.fm.

The Checkered Shelf is also participating in the 2026 Northeast Ohio Indie Bookshop Hop, a free regional passport event running from April 25 through June 30 featuring 28 bookstores across the region. Participants can collect stamps, unlock store perks, and enter prize drawings while supporting local independent bookstores.

We are grateful to The Checkered Shelf Bookshop for supporting literacy, local families, and the joy of reading. We hope our community will stop by on April 25 to shop local, celebrate books, and help open doors through literacy.
