Family Fun Activity: Tangrams

Looking for a fun and simple learning activity to do at home or while you’re out and about? Try exploring tangrams!

Tangrams are puzzles made from seven different shapes (two small triangles, one medium triangle, two large triangles, a square, and a parallelogram), called “tans,” that can be arranged to create animals, objects, people, and more.

Three abstract geometric logos: a house-like figure on the left, a play-arrow cluster on the right, and a stylized bird below, all in bright pastel colors.

How to Use Your Tangrams at Home

Start by letting your child freely explore the pieces. Encourage them to:

  • Sort the shapes by size
  • Count the pieces
  • Name the different shapes
  • Create pictures and patterns

As your child plays, ask questions like:

  • Which piece do you think fits here?
  • What shape is that?
  • Can you turn the piece another way?
  • What else could you create?

These conversations help build vocabulary and strengthen problem solving skills.

Create Your Own Tangram Designs

Tangrams are also a wonderful way to foster spatial intelligence, imagination and creativity.

Your child might make an animal, a house, a boat, a flower, or something completely original.

If you like, when your child finishes their creation:

  1. Place the pieces on a sheet of paper
  2. Trace around the outside edges
  3. Give the design a fun name
  4. Write the name on the paper
