2022 International Literacy Day was a success for our community – Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces in Cuyahoga County

Every year on September 8th we recognize and celebrate International Literacy Day (ILD). Since 1967, ILD celebrations have taken place annually around the world to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society.

This year’s ILD theme was “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces” and provided an opportunity to highlight the importance of literacy learning spaces and to validate the ways in which these spaces have changed over the past few years.

Since 2014, The Literacy Cooperative has led the community’s participation in UNESCO’s annual celebrations as a way of advocating for our community’s commitment to literacy. Using this year’s theme, we invited the community and our partners to promote literacy and reading through showcasing their literacy learning spaces on social media using our #LitSpace2022 and #ILD22 hashtags.

The 2022 campaign was a great success! Across all of The Literacy Cooperative’s social media platforms we reached over 3,200 people and boasted more than 140 posts with our community hashtags. Scroll down to see some of the pictures from the day.

We want to express our thanks and appreciation to all partners involved in the 2022 campaign. They include: City of Cleveland, Cleveland Public Library, Towards Employment, Literacy Innovations, The Centers, Seeds of Literacy, Ideastream Public Media, Cleveland Kids’ Book Bank, Starting Point, Step Forward, The Center for Community Solutions, Maple Heights School District, Early Ages Healthy Stages, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority, Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Young Adult Resource Center at OhioMeansJobs | Cleveland – Cuyahoga County, Youth Opportunities Unlimited, and Nurse on the Rise!

The Literacy Cooperative is grateful to our community for sharing our messages about the importance of advancing literacy in our community. Literacy provides the opportunity for equality, inclusion, and advancement for all. ILD is a great platform to bring awareness to this issue. We encourage everyone to continue the work each and every day.
